About AIDER project –

AIDER is a European research project developing next-generation imaging technology to advance targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) for cancer treatment. TRT uses radiopharmaceuticals to deliver radiation directly to cancer cells, making accurate measurement of the radiation dose essential for maximizing treatment effectiveness while minimizing side effects.

The project focuses on targeted alpha therapy, where current imaging systems struggle to provide the precision needed for image-based dosimetry. To address this challenge, AIDER is developing an innovative imaging system based on Compton camera technology, combining state-of-the-art detectors, advanced electronics, Monte Carlo simulations, and sophisticated image reconstruction algorithms to achieve high-performance quantitative imaging.

The technology will be validated through a comprehensive clinical evaluation, progressing from laboratory and anthropomorphic phantom studies to testing with patients undergoing targeted radionuclide therapy. By enabling accurate, treatment-specific dosimetry, AIDER aims to support more personalized cancer therapies and improve patient outcomes.

Bringing together leading European experts in medical imaging, detector technology, nuclear medicine, clinical research, industry, and patient advocacy, the AIDER consortium is working to transform imaging for targeted radionuclide therapy and pave the way for safer, more effective precision cancer treatment.

Objectives –

  • Optimizing the technology in terms of energy, timing resolution and efficiency employing cutting edge detectors and electronics.
  • Assembling a demonstrator with excellent performance and associated image reconstruction and dosimetry tools for clinical operation.
  • Validating the system in hospitals with both phantoms and patients.
